Do you know what platform your website runs on? Nowadays, most sites use one of many mainstream Content Management Systems (CMS), like WordPress, Joomla, Magento, etc. That’s good. Why? Site backends that are more mainstream tend to have better site structure. Better structure helps search engines understand how each page within your site is related to other pages. Analyzing a website’s structure has always been an important part of our approach to initial optimization. However, it just became that much more important.
Last week Google had a patent granted for “Updating taxonomy based on webpage.” According to this article on SEO by the Sea, “The patent provides examples of sites that are organized into hierarchical structures, and how those can help give a search engines clues about the taxonomies that make up the structure of a site.” This algorithm supports the theory that having clean, organized code is worth the extra effort.
